Equity – The new focus in responsible gambling

Responsible Gambling NZ - Equity

Guided by publicly-funded research from the University of Auckland, the Ministry of Health has introduced a new approach to problem gambling. This approach aims to place equity at the heart of its response. The approach to gambling-related harms will target those groups most at risk. The new measures include closing existing gaps in the range of support services, lowering stigma and preventing problem gambling among populations who suffer negative effects. Most of this population consists of Māori, Pasifika, and Asian populations, as well as young people.

Furthermore, Māori people are more than three times as likely to be at moderate-risk of problem gambling, according to a survey in 2020. Whereas, Pasifika had more than twice the risk compared to others. However, the gambling risk factor for the Asian community was 9.5 times higher than that of white New Zealanders.

Services

New public health and clinical intervention services, including kaupapa Māori programs will be ordered by the ministry. These new health services are to even up the odds. As a result, the plan is to spend just over $76 million over four years to target at risk groups. This is an increase of approximately $16 million over the previous three-year measurement period. The programme also includes a number of other novel strategies.

Furthermore, The adjustments coincide with the publication of research that has the support of the ministry. This research looks at the effectiveness of various counselling techniques for problem gamblers.

Trials

Professor Maria Bellringer, who is director of the AUT Gambling and Addictions Research Centre, was behind conducting a two-year random trial. It was a trial to compare the effectiveness of motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural therapy in treating problem gamblers. She was in shock to see that even two years after the treatment, the two treatments produced largely comparably favourable results among the 227 individuals in the study.
