Government data in New Zealand indicates that at least one in five people is affected by gambling-related harm. This may be as a result of their own actions or the actions of their loved ones.
Therefore, gambling addiction is a serious health problem. This can have serious negative consequences on players. Some of the heavily affected persons are the communities that are exposed to a large share of gaming machines.
The government plans to invest $76 million in an initiative known as “Strategy to minimise gambling harm”. The program has several key pivots. One of the areas that it focuses on is the training of a diverse and skilled workforce.
The funds will also go towards expanding digital services and providing support. Also, the funds will also go towards sensitization of young people on gambling harm.
Stigma is a big hindrance to recovery. Accordingly, many gambling addicts are ashamed of seeking help. Therefore, another focus of the program will be on the de-stigmatization of people seeking help for problem gambling.
The government will focus more on the affected gambling communities. These include the Asian, Pacific, and Maori people.
Andrew Little, a government representative suggests that this strategy aligns with the overall gambling strategy. The aim of this strategy is to reduce any potential harm.
This combined with the new mental health system will go a long in preventing gambling harm. Some of the common gambling problems include financial, relationship problems, alcohol abuse, and family violence.
